The Rolling/Z-Mill Rolling Technician position requires a broad background and experience in metal-working and characterization of metal foils. In this role, the technician will work closely with Process Development Engineers, Manufacturing Engineers and Technicians in executing experiments to support new process development and optimization, yield improvement and product improvements of metallic substrates for the manufacture of high-temperature superconductors (HTS). As the technology developed matures and transitions into manufacturing, it is expected this position will also support routine production schedules. The primary responsibilities of this position are to execute plans for rolling metal to foil, setting up various heat treatments in batch and reel-to-reel furnaces as well as characterizing the material and tooling with optical microscopy and surface roughness analytical tools. The Rolling/Z-Mill Rolling Technician will be required to work independently for periods of time and multi-task in a fast-paced environment of production and concurrent engineering. He or she must be a highly motivated self-starter with meticulous record-keeping skills. Essential Duties and Responsibilities Assists in developing new rolling and heat treatment processes by executing experiments. Operates various rolling mills including Z-mill and 4-high mills for routine and exploratory runs. Loads, operates and programs furnaces. Collects, organizes and analyzes data. Prepares or assists in preparing samples for analysis including metallography and optical imaging. Characterizes material properties such as surface finish, grain size and hardness Inspects and fills out inspection reports on specialized tooling such as roll-surface inspection. Supports the Engineers and Scientists in organizing documentation for transferring new processes or process changes to manufacturing. Supports the installation, commissioning, qualification, maintenance and modifications of equipment. Assists in engineering verification and validation activities of products and processes. Performs manufacturing / production duties as required. Position Requirements and Skills Combined 5–10 years of experience in R&D and manufacturing engineering environment. Experience with rolling mills including Z-mills and 4-high mills, operating furnaces, roll-slitters and vacuum systems. Competency with analytical tools such as optical microscopes, hardness testers and surface roughness testers. Demonstrated ability for paying attention to detail and thorough planning with methodical approaches to problem solving. Ability to work cooperatively in a team environment. Excellent troubleshooting and problem-solving skills. Demonstrated ability to work independently, manage time while multi-tasking. Excellent communication skills, oral and written. Proficient PC skills including MS Excel and Word. Flexibility to work overtime as required.
